When Christine's mare Nikki was kicked in pasture, she was staying with me in Castro Valley as a lesson horse for natural horsemanship training. She was my favorite horse for beginners.
Nikki enjoys being with humans, and she showed it by being easy to catch, be ridden or just hanging out. Students were at ease with her, and that's so important when learning to develop a relationship with a horse.
One of Nikki's students was a 12-year-old boy with Cerebral Palsy. He built enough confidence in himself to get Nikki on his own in the pasture, groom her and tack her up. Riding caused him to use different muscles of his body, thus enhancing his physical ability in other types of sports. It also awakened certain parts of his nervous system.
Another student who is rather nervous being on a horse would mount and dismount several times in a row and Nikki would just stand patiently as the student built her confidence.
Nikki is "worth her weight in gold"!
